Seeking Wholeness: Health Ministry in the WV-WMD Synod
Can we see health as something other than “an absence of disease?”
- Can we take seriously the biblical command to “teach, preach, and heal?”
- Can we integrate a life affirming health ministry into the faith life of a congregation?
- Can we see health, not as an end in itself, but as a means to serve others?
These and other health related questions are points to ponder, to pray about, to creatively dialogue, and to joyfully pursue across the WV-WMD Synod as Community Lutheran Partners, Inc. continues to promote health in the Lutheran community.
The church is the only organization the touches the lives of all age groups and all income levels of a community. In addition to this fact, the church is strategically placed with the mission to affect the community in positive ways. Congregations are meant to ensure the growth, health, and well-being of the membership at least, and to affect the community in positive ways at best.
To take a pro-active stance on health issues is a counterculture move. Over the centuries, the church has been an historical catalyst for societal change. Many would even say that the purpose of the church is to be the conscience of society. When the church provides a spiritual approach to changing and sustaining lifestyles, such changes can become real. In addition to this strength, we see health as a gift from God- and what better way to exercise good stewardship than by taking care of that gift.
How can we help shift our view to see health as a gift from God with the individual as steward of his/her own health? Looking at patterns of disease in the WV- W MD Synod, we see heart disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic lung disease, and overweight/obesity issues. Each of these is a lifestyle disease that can be affected positively- often in dramatic ways- when one is encouraged and supported in a lifestyle change.
